"A classic tale of morality, destiny, political and religious hypocrisy, the price of evil, and the cost of salvation."
In the decaying heart of Amortera, where vitality has withered into silence, Eva Dawn—an isolated and misunderstood Vitalist—is plagued by nightmares that bleed into waking life.
She hides from them, convinced they're nothing more than fractured illusions. But the truth claws beneath the surface, hungering for release. Something ancient is stirring, and Eva is its unwilling vessel. When her visions spill into reality, unraveling everything she's known, she's forced to confront a power within that terrifies her—and may destroy her.

I am woken by something warm against my skin. As I open my eyes, I see the amber light glowing in the dark of my room and look down to my amulet.
This can’t be right.
The amulet is only used to indicate Meditation and council meetings. It’s far too early for Meditation to start. The sun isn’t even awake. I step out into the hallway to be greeted by an equally confused Isaak and his eyes turn to me in a daze that quickly changes to horror.
“Eva!” he exclaims. “Your face . . .”
I hurry to the bathroom, conjuring firelight to see better. The face I see nearly causes me to run screaming from the room. My eyes are sunken into my skull and my cheek bones poke out prominently against my thinning face. The dark circles have turned completely black under my eyes. I do look like the walking dead.
“What’s going on?” Isaak asks. He has followed me into the bathroom.
“I don’t know Isaak,” I reply anxiously, examining my face closely in the mirror. “I’ll go to the Infirmary later today to see if they have any suggestions.” I drop the topic, too focused on the glowing amulets. “We need to go,” I say. He doesn’t reply but only looks at me for a moment before silently agreeing and returning to his room to get dressed.
I quickly wash up, trying to hide as much of my disturbing appearance as I can before we leave. Thankfully, I am able to scrub some color back into my cheeks and my face actually seems to be coming back to its usual appearance the longer I am awake. Downstairs, I gulp down a cup of tea while I wait for Isaak. His recent anger outbursts have me worried. It’s so unlike him.
“Let’s go,” Isaak says from behind, quickly throwing his cloak over himself. I pull the hood of my cloak over my head and follow him outside.
The storm looks to have passed, at least for now, giving us the chance to walk to the Hall of Meeting without being drenched. I think it is much closer to dawn than I originally thought. The clouds are just so dark that they are blocking any light from penetrating through. I notice a large tree near the edge of the forest a few yards from our house was knocked down by the winds. That must be the cause of the loud crash I heard before falling asleep.
Vitalists are trickling out of their houses, looking distraught and talking amongst each other in panic. Isaak and I walk along the main path, taking in the damage from the storm. Pieces of homes lay in shreds on the ground a good distance from where they originated as a whole, tree branches have been tossed around like twigs, obscuring pathways, and a few trees in their entirety are completely uprooted. The river is flooded and full of debris.
